McGlaun, Harkins named Elachee Volunteers of the Year

By AccessWDUN staff

Garry McGlaun of Gainesville and Nick Harkins of Flowery Branch are the Elachee Nature Science Center's 2016 Volunteers of the Year.

Both were recognized at Elachee’s recent annual volunteer appreciation dinner.

McGlaun, a transplant from Texas who thought he would live in Gainesville a couple of years and then move on, has lived here since 1968, and serves as Elachee’s beekeeper, giving students and other visitors a peek inside a working beehive, part of a newly installed permanent pollinator exhibit at Elachee.

On the other end of the age spectrum, 16-year-old Harkins grew up spending summers at Camp Elachee, and as soon as he “aged out” as a camper turned his attention to creating experiences for young Elachee campers as a counselor-in-training.
