Lions Rally to Complete Lone Star Sweep with 13-11 Win Over Southwestern

By AccessWDUN Staff

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Down 8-1 after three innings, the Piedmont College baseball team posted an impressive rally scoring ten runs over the next three innings in a wild 13-11 win over Southwestern (Texas) University on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions trailed by seven before hitting the middle three innings where the offense exploded to overtake the Pirates for the first time since taking a 1-0 lead in the game on a Breck Davidson single back in the first. Three different Lions posted multiple-RBI basehits in the 10-run stretch including Zack Johnson whose two-RBI single in the fifth was part of a 4-for-5 day at the dish.

Down just one heading into the 6th, an Evan Gresham single that scored freshman Brady Ballstadt tied it up at 8-8 before a Davdison single gave the team back the lead. Michael Barnes posted a 2-RBI single later in the inning to provide some room for the bullpen to work with.

After Griffin Olson gave his team a 13-11 advantage in the 9th on an RBI single, save machine Josh Thomas had a two-run cushion to collect his third save in as many appearances if he could stay clean in the home half.

Thomas would do just that retiring three of four batters faced to hand Piedmont the win and collect his fourth save of the season, just two shy of a career single-season high already with only five games gone in the '16 season.

Coming back from Texas after three road games, Piedmont returns home to host the Piedmont College Early Spring Classic next weekend with York, Virginia Wesleyan, and Millsaps all coming to town for a star-studded event at Loudermilk Field. The Lions will play on Friday night under the lights against York at 7 p.m. while Virginia Wesleyan awaits on Saturday (5 pm first pitch) and Millsaps readies for a Sunday showdown with PC at 4 p.m.
