VIDEO: Better late than never. A cold plunge into Lake Lanier

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

It was sunny but cold, both on the dock and in the water, Saturday as about 50 brave souls took to the waters of Lake Lanier for the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

The event, a fundraiser for the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, was postponed from the traditional New Year's Day because of debris in the lake and flooding around the Olympic venue caused by torrential rains the previous two weeks.

Club officials handed out awards for Best Jump (Josh Burchardt), Best Splash (P.J. Hulsey), Best Costume (Cole Dorminey), Funniest Chicken (Brian Rochester), Oldest Jumper (James Filhart, 74), and Youngest Jumper (Gage Breakfield, 7).

Forty-nine people signed up for the event but a handful, about half-a-dozen, indicated they did not plan to jump.
