Wrestling: Area wrestlers take down next step toward Traditional titles

Northeast Georgia area wrestlers took the next step toward possible state titles Saturday in Traditional Sectionals held around the state.

Each classification held two Sectionals to pare down the field. Class A and AA took the top four in each Sectional while Classes AAA to AAAAAA took the top eight in each Sectional to make up the field for next week's Traditional State Championship round, which will be held at the Infinite Energy Center in Gwinnett County.

Defending state champions Commerce (Class A) and Jefferson (Class AAA) both had huge days. Commerce pushed through all 14 wrestlers to the championship round while Jefferson sent 13 into the championship round.

Jackson County and Lumpkin County each had 10 wrestlers advance in Class AAA while and North Hall and Buford in Class AAAA both sent 10 to the championship round.

Below is a look at the top finishers in the Sectionals that involved northeast Georgia teams:

Class A B Sectional (at Mt. Zion, Carroll):

Commerce advanced all 14 wrestlers, including 10 that grabbed No. 1 seeds, into next week’s Traditional state title tournament, including producing 10 champions Saturday at the Class A Sectionals at Mt. Zion, Carroll.

Class AAAAA A Sectional (at Lanier High):

It was a tough day for Area 8-AAAAA but host Lanier was able to push five into the state round. Josh Speight finished eighth in 106, Mackenzie Rannals took fourth in 113, Shoayb Saddiq was seventh in 145, Wilson Ethan sixth in 170, and Alejandro Garcia finished seventh in 182.

For Flowery Branch, Anthony Woodall finished second in 220, Ronald Link was third in 132, and Ian Augero fifth in 138.

Gainesville saw Jeferson Garcia take fourth in 138, Terrell Knight seventh in 160, and Anthony Constantini fifth in 195.

Cameron Best was the only wrestler to advance for Winder-Barrow finishing eighth in 285.

In the Class AA A Sectional at Greater Atlanta Christian, Rabun County’s Peyton Backer won the 285-pound division with Riverside Military Academy’s Quinton Monroe taking fourth in 285 for the only wrestlers to advance.
