Gainesville High NJROTC tours Charleston naval museum; spends the night aboard USS Yorktown

By AccessWDUN staff
The Gainesville High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps recently participated in the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum's camping program aboard the historic World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown on Charleston harbor.

During the trip, the Cadets became "shipmates" while touring the museum's 70-year-old warships: the USS Yorktown, World War II Destroyer USS Laffey, and the Cold War submarine USS Clamagore.

Aboard the Yorktown, where the Cadets spent the night in berthing areas of the ship, meals were served in the same fashion that the ship's sailors were served decades ago.  The group also visited the Fort Sumter National Monument, where the Civil War started, and toured the historic sections of Charleston, South Carolina.

The NJROTC unit is led by Lieutenant Nate Bourdeau (USCG Ret.) and Senior Chief Scott Thomson (USN Ret.).
