No injuries reported in Gainesville SWAT standoff

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

A brief SWAT standoff in Gainesville ended peacefully Monday afternoon when a wanted felon was taken into custody by Hall County authorities.

Hall County Sheriff's Deputies, along with members of the county SWAT team, were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a home on Holland Drive near Browns Bridge Road when the standoff occurred.

"Deputies arrived to serve an arrest warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon," explained Deputy Stephen Wilbanks. "33 year-old David Gene Turpin initially refused to exit his home."

Wilbanks said the warrant was acquired after authorities learned of an unspecified incident involving the suspect that had taken place earlier in the day.

"The warrant was issued after an incident...in which investigators and deputies learned that Mr. Turpin was in possession of a handgun, and he was known to be a convicted felon," he continued.

Authorities attempted to negotiate with Turpin in hopes that he would exit the home without the use of force being required, but Wilbanks said they were eventually compelled to utilize "chemical agents to coax him from the house."

Turpin was taken into custody without further incident, and Wilbanks said the situation ended with no injuries having been reported.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division.

"Investigators are still working the scene and determining if any additional charges will be filed."
