A teacher at the World Language Academy Middle School at the Academies of Discovery Campus is credited with extinguishing a fire started by a student Thursday morning in a school bathroom.
The fire started around 10:10 a.m. and Alfredo Hernandez, a math and technology teacher, grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and put out the flames, according to Gordon Higgins, Hall County School System spokesman.
"The district sincerely appreciates the actions of Mr. Hernandez to ensure the safety of our students," said Higgins in a news release.
Hernandez also made sure all students were cleared from the bathroom when he smelled smoke.
Officials said a male student started the fire during a class change, and that no other students were in the restroom at the time of the incident.
That student has been suspended, pending a disciplinary tribunal.
