Gainesville BOE agrees to name new school Mundy Mill Academy

GAINESVILLE – The name for the new elementary school under construction in the Mundy Mill Subdivision was a unanimous choice Monday evening by the Gainesville City School Board: Mundy Mill Academy.

And the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

“Our rock was delivered today,” Superintendent Dr. Wanda Creel told school board members, referring to the iconic monolith that is part of Gainesville City Schools.

“It weighed in at 26,800 pounds…and we will paint the name on the rock so that the community can see that we have named the school Mundy Mill Academy,” Creel said.

A committee was created earlier in the month to collect input from the community and study potential names for the $17.4-million project slated to open this summer.

Committee member Matt Dubnik told board members, “The reason we felt strongly about that (name) was as you look around the schools in the district you see a lot of geographic descriptors of those schools.”

Dubnik said the other name given strong consideration was Millside Academy because that is the name of the Parkway leading to the 130,000-square foot school.

Also considered by the committee were Gene Beckstein Elementary and Champion Elementary according to Dubnik.

SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH FIRM SELECTED

The school board also approved the selection of King-Cooper & Associates, consultants in the process of hiring a school superintendent.

The Thomaston, Georgia, firm has operated as superintendent search specialist since 2001.

CENTENNIAL / ENOTA TRANSITION PLAN REVEALED

Superintendent Creel was joined by Wesley Roach, Principal at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy and Leslie Frierson, Principal at Centennial Arts Academy, to explain to the board transition plans, including the traffic flow plan for cars and buses, at the combined campuses of Enota, Centennial, Woods Mill and Gainesville High School.

Enota students will be sharing the campus with the other schools while a new facility is constructed at their current site on Enota Drive

Specific details of the traffic strategy and an illustrated site plan will be available on the school system website as soon as possible according to Dr. Creel.
