Jackson, Lammers lead Georgia Tech past Southern 77-62

By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Tadric Jackson scored 11 consecutive Georgia Tech points in the first half and finished with a career-high 20 points as the Yellow Jackets beat Southern 77-62 on Monday night.

Tech (2-0) played a little more at the pace new head coach Josh Pastner is seeking since leaving Memphis, as the Jackets were far more effective than in their season-opening 70-55 win over Tennessee Tech on Friday.

Freshman Josh Okogie had 18 points for the second game in a row for Georgia Tech. Ben Lammers added 13 points and had career highs of 15 rebounds and nine blocked shots. The Yellow Jackets set a program record with 16 blocks.

Trelun Banks scored 19 points for the Jaguars (0-2), who upset Georgia Tech 93-78 in the only other meeting between the programs in the 1993 NCAA Tournament. Shawn Prudhomme added 15.

Southern went to the NCAA Tournament last season as the SWAC tournament champion, but the Jaguars couldn't match Tech's length.

BIG PICTURE

Southern: The Jaguars can't be entirely disappointed with their showing Monday, as they held their own on the boards. Tech had just a 43-40 rebounding edge. Southern was competitive in nearly every way, except the Jaguars had a 24-of-72 shooting night (33 percent).

Georgia Tech: Pastner might be pleased with the improved pace, but if the Jackets are going to be competitive this season in the ACC —where they were picked to finish near the bottom — he's going to need his team to rebound better. The Jaguars led Tech in rebounding until late in the game.

UP NEXT

Southern: The Jaguars play at Sam Houston State on Thursday night.

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets will stick around for the third of five home games to start the season when they play Ohio on Friday.
