Jackson County selects site for Animal Shelter

The citizens of Jackson County will soon have an animal shelter in Jefferson as the Board of Commissioners signed on the dotted line to purchase land and a facility Wednesday.

The facility will be located at 29 Galilee Church Road on a 2.35 acre site. The property formerly belonged Mrs. Maryann Gentzel, and Chairman Tim Crow thanked her Tuesday furing the process for working with th county to allow for the acquisition of the property and building.

The shelter will be almost entirely funded through SPLOST funds - $250,000 of the estimated $259,476 needed.

In 2016, Jackson County Animal Control picked up over 450 animals. More than 75% of those animals were placed in new forever homes or transported to adoption agencies.

Chairman Tom Crow has stated previously that with Jackson County having its own shelter, hopes are to increase adoption numbers, save money and better serve the community. It will be licensed through the Department of Agriculture to service domesticated cats and dogs.

More information about the shelter can found online at the Jackson County Government Facebook page or by calling 706-367-5480.
