Local communities will honor veterans this week

By AccessWDUN Staff

While Tuesday's General Election is making most of the news headlines right now, a number of communities across North Georgia are hoping to put area veterans in the spotlight later this week.

The official commemoration of Veterans Day is Friday, November 11, but events also have been scheduled for other days this week. Check the following schedule to see if there's a celebration in your area.

Wednesday, November 9

Brenau University in Gainesville will dedicate a new lounge devoted to veterans, who make up 12% of the university's student body. The dedication ceremony is set for 1 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Owens Student Center at 102 Prior Street.

Thursday, November 10

The North Georgia Technical College Student Government Association (SGA) has invited area veterans to an honorary breakfast from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the Ramsay-Hunter Dining Hall Annex on the Clarkesville Campus. In addition to the free breakfast, as a token of NGTC s appreciation for their service, all veterans in attendance will receive a U.S. Flag lapel pin.

At 10 a.m., following the veterans-only breakfast, the public is invited to join NGTC for a special program on the Clarkesville Campus Quad.

Friday, November 11

*The annual Veterans Day commemoration in Lula is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Lula Veterans Park in the downtown area.

*The Paul E. Bolding Post of the American Legion in Gainesville will hold its annual Veterans Day service at Lakewood Baptist Church on Thompson Bridge Road. The event begins at 11 a.m. This year's guest speaker is the President of Riverside Military Academy, Col. (Retired) William Gallagher.

*Gwinnett County will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial, located on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville.

*The Annual Veterans Day Parade in Dawsonville begins at 3 p.m. at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. The hour-long parade will end back at the Hall of Fame and then a Veterans Day celebration will continue for another hour.

If your community is having a Veterans Day event, please let us know, and we'll add it to our list.
