Hall County School District challenges community to become "constitutionally literate"

By AccessWDUN Staff

Just one week away from the November 8 General Election, the Hall County School District has issued a challenge to the Hall County community to become the "Most Constitutionally Literate Community in the Nation.”

Superintendent Will Schofield issued the challenge via email Tuesday morning, saying the school system will make a push in classrooms to emphasize the importance of the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

"On Veterans’ Day [November 11] we will unveil a locally developed online course designed to promote appreciation and understanding of the governing principles that have guided our nation for 240 years," Schofield wrote.

"Additionally, with the help of local veterans, we will distribute thousands of pocket Constitutions to students. Our teachers will be encouraged to engage students in discussions and classroom projects that deepen understanding and support the meaningful application of these principles."

The school system is also encouraging local families, businesses, churches and other community groups to take part in the effort by signing an online petition supporting the effort.

Schofield said the school system has additional pocket-sized Constitutions that it will sell to non-students for 50-cents each. The copies will be on sale at the district headquarters at 711 Green Street in Gainesville. Local groups can also make donations to further the distribution effort.

Will Schofield will be a guest on WDUN's Morning News on Wednesday, November 2 to discuss the effort in detail
