GSP charges driver in Rabun County wreck that kills two, injures three others

WILEY — The Georgia State Patrol has charged a female driver in connection with a two-vehicle wreck that claimed the lives of two people, seriously injured two others and resulted in minor injuries to a toddler in Rabun County Tuesday afternoon.

The wreck happened about 2:45 p.m. on U.S. 441 (Ga. 15) at Wolf Creek Road, said Trooper 1st Class Joseph Tucker of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa.

"Vehicle 1 was coming out of Wolf Creek turning left, actually was traveling southbound in the northbound lane, realized and made a hard turn to the right to get into the southbound lane," Tucker said. "The front of Vehicle 1, which was a Toyota Tacoma truck, struck a Nissan Titan in the left lane of Ga. 15 southbound.

"The [Nissan] truck came across the median and came into the left turn lane of Ga. 15 northbound, crossed back over to the median, overturned two times, landing on its wheels," Tucker said. "Four people out of that vehicle got ejected — all were not wearing their seatbelts. There was also a toddler that was in a booster seat that suffered minor injuries."

Two of the people ejected from the Nissan truck died at the scene, a third was seriously injured and was airlifted, and another was ground transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Alcohol is suspected in the wreck and charges against the driver of the Toyota pickup truck are pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, which will be taken over by the Georgia Department of Public Safety Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.

The wreck shut down the busy highway for about four hours.
