State Labor Department hosting workshop in Habersham for ex-offenders, others

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

A number of ex-offenders and others who are having difficulty finding employment are expected to attend a workshop in Cornelia that is designed to help them find and keep jobs.

The workshop, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL), will be held Friday from 10 a.m.to noon at the GDOL’s Habersham Career Center located in Suite 205 at 215 Hodge St. in Cornelia.

The workshop is part of The Offender Parolee Probationer State Training Employment Program (TOPPSTEP). The program is designed to help ex-offenders move successfully from prison or probation into the workforce.

The workshop will focus on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Federal Bonding Program, which gives employers tax credits as incentives to hire ex-offenders and other individuals who have difficulty finding jobs, such as welfare recipients, veterans with dishonorable discharges and others with poor credit or work history.

Attendees will register with Employ Georgia at www.employgeorgia.com, where they can get access to thousands of job openings. Then, they will view a power-point presentation and be given a packet of information on how individuals who have difficulty finding jobs may become more employable.

Other features of the workshop include access to retraining or on-the-job training, job search workshops, online resume tutorials, labor market information, internet access and other resources. Also, information on community resources, including connections to faith-based organizations, along with clothing and food banks, will be provided.

The program is a joint effort of the GDOL, Department of Corrections, Department of Community Supervision and the State Board of Pardons and Paroles.

For additional information about the workshop, contact [email protected] or call the GDOL’s Habersham Career Center at (706) 776-0811. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
