The First Time: a reverse look at season stats

Normally I take a few minutes of your time on Friday to talk about "The Last Time" something happened for Georgia football, or its opponent.

Often times, these things are hard to predict because they are so fluky, or it requires some happenstance you'd never think to put together, like only beating an FCS team by two points.

(Ouch.)

So.

Here's some stats I didn't think about, but happened anyway from this year.

For the first time since...

Nov. 7, 2015: Georgia won a game by double digits, which happened in the 28-14 victory over South Carolina. It hadn't happened since a 27-3 win over Kentucky.

Oct. 31, 2015: UGA was shutout in the first half. Until the Ole Miss game, this hadn't happened since the 27-3 loss to Florida.

Sept. 12, 2015: A Georgia defender scored a touchdown. Lorenzo Carter's fumble return against Nicholls State was the first defensive score since Dominick Sanders' pick-six in Nashville.

Nov. 30, 2013: The Bulldogs started two quarterbacks in the same season. On this date, Hutson Mason started in place of an injured Aaron Murray, leading the Dogs to a 41-34 comeback win over Georgia Tech in double-OT.

Oct. 2013: Georgia failed to win an October home game. It should be noted that the Bulldogs played only one home game that year — a 46-21 loss to Missouri. There were two this year, losses to Tennessee and Vandy.

Oct. 19, 2013 (1): UGA failed to record a special teams touchdown by its seventh game of the year. In both 2014 and 2015, Isaiah McKenzie had punt return touchdowns in September, and Todd Gurley chipped in a kickoff return score in 2014.

Oct. 19, 2013 (2): All of Georgia's passing touchdowns came from a single quarterback across the first seven games. In 2013, Murray accounted for every passing touchdown through seven games. In 2016 so far, Jacob Eason has thrown all nine of his team's touchdown passes.

Oct. 19, 2013 (3): No UGA opponent was held under 10 points across the first seven games.

Sept. 22, 2012: The Bulldog secondary failed to record an interception against Vanderbilt.

Sept. 10, 2011: Georgia surrendered 45 points, which happened in the 45-14 loss to Ole Miss. The Bulldogs hadn't allowed that many points since a 45-42 loss to South Carolina.

Nov. 21, 2009: UGA lost two home games in a single season. That day, the Bulldogs lost to Kentucky 34-27. So far, Georgia has dropped two of its three home games, to Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Nov. 1, 2008: The Bulldogs trailed by 45 points. Ole Miss's 45-0 lead in the second half was the first time that happened since Florida held a 49-3 lead over Georgia in Jacksonville. (49-10 was the final.)

Sept. 13, 2008: Georgia beat South Carolina in Columbia.

Dec. 30, 2006: UGA won a game in the Georgia Dome. The Dogs opened the year with a 33-24 win over North Carolina in the Dome, their first win in that facility since the 31-24 Chick-fil-a Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.

Oct. 14, 2006: Georgia lost to Vanderbilt at home.

Sept. 23, 2006: The Bulldogs won a one-point game. Georgia's 28-27 victory over Missouri was its first one-point win since a 14-13 home win over Colorado.

Sept. 16, 2006: A UGA freshman quarterback won his first start. Matt Stafford beat UAB 34-0. Eason beat Nicholls State 26-24.

Nov. 23, 1996: Ole Miss beat Georgia. Mark Richt never lost to the Rebels during his tenure in Athens, going 6-0. Jim Donnan lost his first attempt 31-27, then went 4-0 the rest of the way.

Oct. 19, 1996: A first-year head coach at Georgia lost three of his first seven games. Donnan started 3-4 that year. Richt went 5-2 in his first seven games in 2001.

Sept. 23, 1995: UGA lost to Ole Miss in Oxford. The Bulldogs had won five straight in Oxford until this year.

Dec. 31, 1971: Georgia beat North Carolina. The two hadn't met since the '71 Orange Bowl, a 7-3 Bulldog victory.

EVER (1): The Bulldogs swept the Columbias. Until this year, Georgia had never beaten both Missouri and South Carolina on the road, failing to convert in the two attempts they've had so far (2012, 2014).

EVER (2): Georgia beat an FCS (formerly 1-AA) opponent by less than 15 points. The closest game the Dogs ever had — until the 26-24 win over Nicholls — was a 28-13 win over Richmond in 1986.
