Two Georgia men, one from Buford, killed in Virginia high-speed boating accident

According to Virginia and Atlanta media outlets, two North Georgia competitive boat racers died after their race boat flipped at a high rate of speed at an event on the Potomac River.

Authorities in Maryland said James Melley, 49 of Buford, and Garth Thomas Tagge, 61 of Atlanta, died Saturday in the boating accident on the river near Fairview Beach, Va., according to a report from CBS 46.

According to reports, a video of the scene shows the boat carrying Tagge and Melley traveling at a high rate of speed before it flipped and ejecting the men.

SpeedOnTheWater.com states the two men were longtime competitive boat racers. They reported this weekend that they were on a 36-foot catamaran on the race course before the accident and that earlier in the day, the two were traveling at 170 MPH
