BLAIRSVILLE — Coming into the 2016 season, Union County quarerback Cole Wright had some big shoes to fill.
Turns out they fit pretty well.
Wright, who took over the starting position vacated by graduated and record-setting standout Joseph Mancuso has helped lead the Panthers right back into the thick of the playoff hunt -- despite the program moving up from Class AA to AAA.
Union County is averaging just over 41 points and 400 yards of offense per game, and the dual-threat junior signal caller has been a big part of that, as the Panthers have continued to roll without missing much a beat, despite coming off the most successful four-year period in program history.
At no time has that been more evident than on Friday, when Wright produced three touchdowns -- two passing and one running -- while rushing for 176 yards and passing for 268 in a 51-46 shootout win over Region 7-AAA foe East Hall.
For his efforts, Wright has ben named the Locos Grill and Pub Friday Game Night Player of the Week.
The 5-1 Panthers face another crucial region battle this week against Dawson County but have built plenty of momentum thanks to players like Wright and senior running back Bo Lynch -- who scored a career-best four touchdowns last week.
With that in mind, AccessWDUN sports and Friday Game Night editor Morgan Lee caught up with Wright to present his award, ask him about Union County's progression and where the Panthers are headed.
