GAINESVILLE — The Chestatee girls used a 23-6 second quarter to blow open a close game en route to a 58-34 Region 8-AAAA victory over Johnson Friday night.
The Lady War Eagles (11-14, 4-3 Region 8-AAAA) led just 10-7 after the first quarter but hit five 3-pointers, including two each by Brooklyn Popham and Kayla Watson, in the second quarter to run out to a 33-13 lead by halftime. They also held Johnson (1-21, 0-6) to just one field goal in the period.
Chestatee poured in 10 3-pointers on the night.
Watson finished with 16 points to lead Chestatee. Lindsey Caudell added 15 points for the Lady War Eagles.
Hannah Hester led Johnson with a game-high 17 points.

The Knights built a big first half lead but had to hold on in the fourth quarter to pick up a Region 8-AAAA win.
Johnson (6-16, 2-4 Region 8-AAAA) opened with a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and led 39-21 at halftime. The Knights extended the lead to 58-34 by the end of the third quarter.
But Chestatee (0-21, 0-7) outscored Johnson 17-5 in the fourth quarter to close the gap but could get no closer than the final score.
Chestatee was led by Nick Lyles with 18 points, nine in the fourth quarter as the War Eagles mounted a late challenge. Najee Whittle had eight points for Chestatee.
Kylin Curry paced Johnson with 15 points. Dwayne Wilson and Yaz Higgins had 11 points each and Andrew Sims added eight for the Knights.
