Police charge man in overnight murder

Authorities have charged a man with malice murder in an overnight incident at a Gainesville apartment complex.

Eric Aurelio Reyes faces the charge in the death of Evan Isaac Rosas, 22, Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

The incident happened around midnight Monday morning at the Preserve at Tumbling Creek apartment complex.  Reyes was taken into custody shortly after police arrived.  The charge came later in the morning.

"This was not a random crime.  It appears that these individuals were at an apartment with a number of other individuals when an altercation ensued," Holbrook said.

"As far as what led to the altercation, that information is still subject to the investigation," he added.

Police found the victim unresponsive and unconscious outside of one of the apartments.  Rosas was pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

"It is early in the investigation, however, it appears that our suspect possibly stabbed the victim," Holbrook said.

Reyes is in custody at the Hall County Jail.  Additional charges are possible, police said.
