Winder soldier killed in Afghanistan to be flown home

A soldier from North Georgia who died from non-combat injuries in Afghanistan will be flown home Tuesday to the Gwinnett County Airport, according to Atlanta news outlets.
 
Kyle E. Gilbert from Winder would have celebrated his 25th birthday today. He was killed on September 21.
 
Gilbert was a 10th Mountain Division soldier with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
 
“Specialist Gilbert was an exceptional Soldier and junior leader in our battalion," said Lt. Col. Michael Kovacevic. "He met every mission and challenge with contagious enthusiasm and vigor. His memory will forever remain with those who served with him.”
 
Gilbert was heavily decorated. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
 
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 2nd at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford.
