Piedmont completes perfect road trip with shutout of Averett

DANVILLE, VIRGINIA — In their second USA South contest of the weekend, the Piedmont College women's soccer team used a goal in the first half and another in the second to overtake Averett University 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The shutout win is Piedmont's 8th clean sheet in nine games this season as the Lady Lions continue one of their best starts to a season now in overall program history.

In the first half, the Lady Lions got on the board with a penalty kick converted by junior Morgan Edelman in the 30th minute of play. Edelman's PK gives her a 3rd goal of the season for the midfielder from Covington, Georgia. 

After 45 minutes, Averett came out on fire in the second half but the Cougars cooled when Piedmont picked up a second goal in the 67th minute. This time, it was midfielder JAZMIN PENADO who scored a Piedmont set piece slotting away a free kick from just at the top of the box to solidify the 2-nil victory for the Lady Lions on the road.

Turning Point
--Jazmin Penado's free kick score in the second half sealed the win and thwarted a red hot Cougars side that came out looking to equalize after halftime.

Standout Performances
--Edelman converted a first-half PK for Piedmont to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
--Michaela Gardner strung together another clean 90 minutes in goal making an exceptional first-half save to keep Averett off the board.

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont dominated the run of play outshooting Averett 20-7 and earning a 9-1 edge in corner kicks as well.
--Four different Lady Lions tallied at least three shots in a well-balanced attack that kept Averett defending throughout. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont now owns a 3-1 advantage in the series between the two programs dating back to 2012 having won the last three straight.
--The Lady Lions have now gone 16-0-1 in their last 17 games dating back to early October of 2014. 
--PC's last loss came on October 6, 2014, a 4-2 defeat at home to Berry College.

PC stays on the road with a mid-week matchup at Covenant College. The Lady Lions will kick off at 4:00 pm on September 30 for their final match of the month.
