HOMER - The Banks County Commission has fgured out how to spend $13.3 million from a proposed 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
During an afternoon work session/called meeting Wednesday, Commission Chairman Jimmy Hooper said it is the five-member commission's job to determine projects that Banks County residents would want, and how much to dedicate to each.
The 1-cent SPLOST, if approved by voters in 2016, would pick up when the current sales tax runs out in 2017.
During Wednesday's meeting, commissioners initially proposed the following breakdown of expenditures:
* Roads and bridges - $4,860,000;
* Public safety/Sheriff/Fire - $3,460,000;
* Water/Sewage - $3,960,000;
* Recreation - $800,000;
* Senior Center renovations - $100,000;
* Candler Building renovations - $25,000;
* Library renovations - $50,000;
* Vehicles - $25,000;
* Multi-departmental expenditures - $20,000.
County Clerk Jenni Gailey pointed out the consensus SPLOST budget is before Hooper meets with city officials next week.
Homer is the only city located entirely within Banks County, but several others are partially within the county's borders.
