Lady Lions drop first conference contest to Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — The Piedmont College volleyball team could not overcome early struggles in a 3-0 loss to Covenant College Wednesday night.

The Scots were explosive early with a .455 attack percentage in the first set and ended the match hitting .265 to Piedmont's .095.

The Scots won the first set 25-14 before the Lady Lions forced extra points in the second set which went 26-24 in favor of Covenant. In the third set, the Scots sealed the match with a 25-18 decision.

Piedmont was without its starting libero as Heather Laprade filled in having served in that position intermittantly throughout the 2014 season. Freshman Hannah Skendziel led the way for Piedmont with the best hitting performance of her career so far recording six kills and a .385 attack percentage.

Turning Point
-The Lady Lions nearly had the second set forcing extra points, but the Scots were able to seal it 26-24 and continue on to sweep Piedmont.

Standout Performances
- Skendziel led the team with six kills
- Laprade served as the libero in Wednesday's outing with a team-high eight digs

Inside the Box Score
-The loss snapped a two game win streak as Piedmont won their first two conference contests.
-The Scots had double the number of kills as Piedmont recording 51 to the Lady Lions' 25.
-The Scots had a pair of players with 15 or more kills as Ginny Moore and Chelsea VanDyk had 17 and 15 kills respectively. 

News & Notes
-The Lady Lions dropped their first USA South contest of the season to move to 2-1 in the league.

Up Next
The Lady Lions will head to LaGrange this weekend for a tri-match with LaGrange and Huntingdon College. Saturday, Piedmont will take on LaGrange at 2:00 p.m. then Huntingdon at 4:00 p.m.
