GAINESVILLE - Hall County tax officials Monday said 2015 Hall County property tax statements are scheduled to be mailed October 1.
The county will issue about 86,000 statements for real and personal property.
To avoid the state-mandated interest of 1 percent on unpaid tax, the final payment must be postmarked on or before Dec. 1. A state-mandated penalty of 10 percent on unpaid tax is applied on March 2. Paying on or before March 1 will prevent the additional 10 percent penalty but will not prevent the 1 percent interest per month after the Dec. 1 due date, according to the county.
In general, whoever owns a property on Jan. 1 of each year is responsible for that year's property tax. If property is purchased/sold (changes ownership) after Jan. 1, it is the responsibility of the buyer and seller to negotiate or determine who will pay the owed tax by the due date.
