CONYERS — Flowery Branch spent all week working on the basics on offense with an eye on making that pay off on the scoreboard.
Mission accomplished.
The Falcons outscored their first three games combined in routing Heritage, Conyers 45-14 on Friday in Conyers.
Flowery Branch (2-2, 1-2 Region 8-AAAAA) sprinted to a 14-0 first quarter lead and made it 35-14 at the half.
"We had a great week of practice, and our guys know that you can’t win games if you don’t score. Our focus this week was to get our offense going, get our playmakers going and execute up front, and we did all those things," said Falcons coach Chris Griffin, who's team was coming off back-to-back shut outs. "We went back to the basics. You’ve got to win up front. You could see in the first two games we really weren’t that far from success. We were giving effort, it was just little things. It came out in our favor this week."
The Branch put up 373 total yards, including 269 rushing -- led by Trey Wilcoxson's 143 yards on 22 carries. Cortez Davis also rushed for 79 yards and a score, while also catching two passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Kory Graham also completed 5 of 7 pass attempts for 49 yards and a touchdown, while Jasen Johnson also threw one pass for 52 yards and a score.
Meanwhile, the Falcons defense held Heritage to 215 total yards -- 154 of that through the air.
"I’ll take a win regardless of the score, but to do it the way we did it tonight is icing on the cake, to know we can score and be explosive," Griffin said.
Flowery Branch returns home next week for a game against Cedar Shoals, hoping to continue their rebound.
"We’re going to enjoy this for 24 hours and come Sunday we’re going to talk about Cedar Shoals," Griffin said. "That’s where our minds are going to be and we’re going to be completely focused. I’m not even thinking down the road. It’s just what’s up next week."
