SUGAR HILL — Even in a smaller city like Sugar Hill, things can get a little loud, so Monday night, city council members voted to amend the city noise ordinance.
The amendment was proposed after city officials began getting complaints about commercial construction happening near residential areas at unreasonable hours.
"This is an amendment in response to some initial construction up on Highway 20 by Zaxby’s and Twin Creeks (neighborhood)," said City Manager Paul Radford. "It also has a much broader implication for future development, and we wanted to be respectful of residential neighborhoods near construction."
The amendment prohibits noises due to construction within 500 feet of residential areas between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday and between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Council pointed out it could not do anything about the noise levels of road construction on Highway 20 because it is a state highway.
City Council voted unanimously to amend the ordinance.
The noise ordinance is effective immediately.
