GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department is looking to donate some of its old uniforms to charity.
Deputy Police Chief Jay Parrish presented the proposal to city council members Thursday morning at the council's work session, and said the Police Department has 35 shirts, 42 pairs of pants and 2 knit caps that are outdated.
"They've become unserviceable but not unwearable, meaning they don't meet the professional look that we need," said Parrish. "Officers have worn them in the field. They may have had a small tear, (or) become faded."
No worries, Parrish said, anybody who comes across them at the Good News Clinics of Gainesville won't be able to impersonate an officer.
"We remove any patches, anything that would identify the uniform as being a police uniform," said Parrish.
They chose Good News because they "provide a variety of services for the less fortunate."
The donation requires a final approval from the council at their voting session Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Complex located on Queen City Parkway.
