OAKWOOD — Zach Matthews and Cole White combined for five touchdowns to lead Lumpkin County to a 38-20 win over Johnson Friday night at Billy Ellis Memorial Stadium.
Matthews finished with 173 yards rushing and the Indians (1-2) piled up 289 yards of toal offense.
White capped a quick drive to open the with a 3-yard scoring run to give Lumpkin County a 7-0 lead. After the two teams traded possessions, Matthews pushed the lead to 14-0 with a 67-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
The Indians extended their lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter when Chandler Woodham scored from 1-yard out. The drive was kept alive by a beautiful one-handed grab by Austin Pierce for a 31-yard gain.
The Knights (1-3) answered that score quickly on a 60-yard touchdown run by Sam Corbett 45 seconds later to cut the lead to 21-7. White closed out the first half scoring with a 9-yard touchdown reception from Woodham for a 28-7 halftime lead.
It stayed that way until late in the third quarter when Wesley Wells drilled a 20yard field goal to push the Indians' lead to 31-7. Matthews would open the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run for Lumpkin County.
Johnson capped a long drive with a Cody Long 1-yard plunge and Corbett scored his second touchdown of the game with 50 seconds on a 37-yard run. Corbett finished with 115 yards rushing and 35-yards passing to lead Johnson.
