MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — After falling behind on three separate occasions the University of North Georgia men's soccer team answered with a trio of equalizers including the final goal by Eric Carrion in the 87th minute to send the game to overtime and an eventual 3-3 draw.
The Buccaneers (0-0-1) got on the board first in the 19th minute when Patrick Brmola found the back of the net on an unassisted goal that came off a blocked shot.
Daniel Joyce brought the score even just minutes later scoring on a ball from Irving Salgado in the 25th. The scoring frenzy settled though as neither team could muster another goal before the halftime horn.
Barry once again struck first in the second half as Thomas Coombes scored the first of his two goals on a ball deflected off UNG goalkeeper Victor Ohlin in the 55th minute. Alex Grant once again drew the game even with his goal in the 69th with an assist from Eddie Hurst.
The Bucs caught a break in the 79th minute being awarded a penalty kick on a well-defended play in the box. Coombes took the kick for BU and burying the ball in the right corner to give Barry the 3-2 lead.
Just as it looked like the Nighthawks were going to fall off the late PK, Eric Carrion gave the team new life finding the back of the net with less than three minutes to play.
UNG came out firing in the first overtime period with Alex Grant blasting a shot from 30 yards out that was just inches away from finding the net. The Nighthawks could not convert on two other golden opportunities including an open net with a UNG shot going wide with five seconds left in the period.
Defense was key for UNG in the second period of OT with Ohlin coming up in the clutch early his hand on a Barry shot that was bound to end the game in the 101st minute. Daniel Bowlt provided a huge slide tackle in the closing seconds that stopped a dangerous Barry counter attack, guaranteeing the result for UNG.
The Nighthawks will stay in Miami to take on Palm Beach Atlantic in the Barry Showcase on Saturday with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. The Sailfish defeated Georgian Court, 7-2, in their first game of the showcase earlier today.
