DULUTH — Senior Kennedy Kotula capped a six-run fifth inning with a grand slam home run to help lead Buford to a 10-3 win over Peachtree Ridge in the Lady Wolves' softball season opener Thursday in the Peachtree Ridge Invitational Tournament.
Buford (1-0) pounded out 13 hits in the five-inning contest, which was called after the fifth inning due to tournament time limits.
Junior Samantha Thomas had a two-run home run as part ofa three-run first inning for the Lady Wolves.
Senior Peyton Wolfe (1-0) got the win going four innings allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three.
Peachtree Ridge rallied with a run in the bottom of the first but the Lady Wolves extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the third. The Lady Lions pulled within 4-3 with a pair of fourth inning runs before Buford blew it open in the fifth.
For Buford, senior Baylee Sexton was a perfect 4-for-4 with one RBI and two stolen bases. Thomas finished with two hits, two RBI and scored three times. Senior Drew Puckett had two hits and scored twice for the Lady Wolves.
Buford next will take on Effingham at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Lanier High School in the Peachtree Ridge tournament.
