GAINESVILLE - The Hall County School Board approved some SPLOST IV requests and talked Advanced Placement scores at their board meeting Monday night.
The SPLOST IV request focused on the renovations and construction at East Hall High School, which included updating the bus drive and construction of the drama building.
"That's two projects - the construction phase of the performing arts center at East Hall, as well as an awful lot of grading, retention ponds, to move the buses and separate them from the car traffic," said Schofield.
According to Director of Facilities Matt Cox, Carroll Daniel bid on the bus drive and performing arts center. That project asked for $1,750,000 and $10,000 for the waste water treatment plant design.
New buses were budgeted at $1,048,755. "Part of our SPLOST proceeds are used for purchasing buses every year, so that purchased a number of transit buses - which are 88 passenger buses, as well as some activity buses," said Schofield. Lastly, Aaron Turpin, Executive Director of Technology, asked for $10,000 worth of cable.
The board approved all of the SPLOST IV funding requests.
AP scores rise for Hall schools
Advanced Placement (AP) offers college courses to high school students, and at the end of the course, students take a test. The test is graded on a scale of one to five.
AP scores showed that the district's average score was 2.3, a rise from last year's 2.13. However, the statewide average was 2.78, up only .01 since last year. The district did issue fewer AP tests this year (2,239) than last year (2,323). Macro Economics, Spanish Language and European History had the highest pass rates, all over 90% and an average score over 3.7. Chemistry was the low point for the district, with a pass rate of 23% and a score of 1.79 average.
"AP scores are improving, we'd always like them to be better," said Superintendent Will Schofield. "But we have an awful lot of kids that take advanced placement and we have a lot of kids that would be in advanced placement in International Baccalureate program, or their in dual enrollment programs. So the trend is moving in the right direction."
The board also recognized several students and faculty members for awards they recieved from outside organizations for their achievements at Monday's meeting.
