Man sentenced to life in slaying of Athens police officer

By Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) A man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the death of an Athens police officer and a suspected drug dealer.

Jamie Hood was sentenced Friday afternoon in the 2011 death of officer Elmer "Buddy'' Christian and Omari Wray. Authorities have said another officer, Tony Howard, was also wounded during the crime spree.

Investigators have said Hood fled after the shooting and agreed to surrender if local news outlets covered his arrest live.

Hood's former defense team said that he was paranoid and delusional, but the man was found competent to stand trial. Hood later fired his attorneys and represented himself during the death penalty case.
