DAHLONEGA — The University of North Georgia (UNG) will host "Honor2Lead: Military Values in Business" on its Dahlonega Campus on Friday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and will simulcast the event around the world to colleges, military bases, reserve components including the National Guard, and businesses.
"I believe there is a crisis in leadership today, not only in our country but around the world," said Dr. John Maxwell, best-selling author and presenter at Honor2Lead. "Events like Honor2Lead help to address that crisis through real-world lessons and by showing examples of values-based leadership in action."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of employees witnessing unethical behavior weekly or more frequently is in the tens of millions. The BB&T Center for Ethical Business Leadership, a unit of UNG's Mike Cottrell College of Business, and UNG's Corps of Cadets are partnering to reach the nation's next generation of leaders with messages focused on the practice and value of ethical leadership.
"The character and leadership skills of the next generation matter for all of us, globally. We want values, ethics and leadership to be part of what businesses care about when searching a resume and an essential aspect of the college curriculum," said Rose Procter, director for the BB&T Center for Ethical Business Leadership.
The Honor2Lead half-day event features some of the top minds and leaders in the fields of business, military and academia to discuss the shared values held by the U.S. armed forces and how those values are applied in organizations. Presenters will include Maxwell; UNG alumnus Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, commander of Operation Inherent Resolve, which is the U.S. military intervention against ISIS; Julia Davis, chief information officer for Aflac Inc.; Jay Rogers, founder of Local Motors; Maj. Gen. Stayce Harris, commander of the 22nd Air Force, Dobbins Air Force Base; and other special guests including former Marine and FedEx founder and CEO Frederick W. Smith, who will receive the Honor2Lead Award.
"The alignment of these international business community members will help drive change. If they voice the importance of soft skills education and show expectations for graduates to have it, universities will provide it," Procter said.
Organizations may participate in Honor2Lead via high-definition simulcast.
