Police ID driver of SUV who ran into Norcross pond

By Associated Press

NORCROSS, Ga. (AP) Police in Gwinnett County have identified a man whose body was found in a submerged SUV last week.

Gwinnett County police said Wednesday that they worked with the Mexican Consulate to identify the motorist as 29-year-old Jose James Contreras. They say they were then able to notify his relatives in Mexico that he had died.

Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Michele Pihera has said the silver SUV was found in a pond near a road in Norcross on June 11.

Pihera says it's unclear why the car veered from the road and traveled through a heavily wooded area before overturning in the pond. Authorities say one of the vehicle's air bags had deployed.

It's unclear how long the vehicle had been underwater before it was recovered.
