Hall GOP to fight proposed tax increases

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE — In a repeat of its objections to tax increases a year ago, the Hall County Republican Party is again lining up in opposition to proposed tax increases this year.

"We stand for the proven principles of smaller government and limited taxation," says a statement issued by the party. "We will continue to hold our elected officials responsible for their actions related to these ideals, especially those who claim our party's banner."

The Hall County Board of Education is currently considering a 2.57 percent tax increase, based on recent hikes in property appraisals. This follows a 4.22 percent increase by the board last year. While the board proposes a slight drop in the current millage rate, tax bills would again be higher dollar for dollar, should the board approve this increase.  School officials have said not all property owners would realize a tax increase.

The possibility of a tax increase by the Hall County Board of Commissioners arose at a meeting on Monday.  In 2014, commissioners rolled back the millage rate to avoid an overall tax increase.

GOP leaders also oppose a proposed tax increase in Flowery Branch.
