ATHENS - The Chief Deputy of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has been named as the new Chief of Police for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department replacing retired Chief Jack Lumpkin.
According to the Athens-Clarke County website, 25-year-police veteran Scott Freeman will take command on July 6th.
The Athens-Clarke County County Manager Alan Reddish says Freeman was chosen from a field of 64 applicants.
The announcement said that Freeman began his law enforcement career in 1990 as a 911 dispatcher with the Conyers Police Department. He was soon promoted to police officer and transferred to the patrol division.
During his 22 years with the Conyers Police Department (CPD), Freeman served in various roles, including traffic enforcement, detective, patrol sergeant, 911 Communications commander, patrol captain, and was ultimately promoted to the rank of major in charge of all daily operations for the department.
During his service, Chief Freeman was one of the most highly decorated officers in the Conyers Police Department.
Chief Freeman currently serves as the Chief Deputy for the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) having been appointed by the newly elected Sheriff in January 2013. The RCSO, consisted of 306 personnel.
Chief Freeman earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership from Mercer University. He is also a graduate of Walden University where he earned a Master of Public Policy and Administration degree and a Doctorate in Public Policy and Administration with a specialization in public safety management and leadership.
Freeman is a 2012 graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, where he also earned a Criminal Justice Education Graduate Certificate from the University of Virginia.
