By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - Plans officially get underway later this month for the 2018 International Canoe Federation (ICF) Dragon Boat World Championships at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue (LLOV).

A meeting is planned June 25 involving the Gainesville/Hall 96 board and staff, along with representatives of the United States Association for Canoe Kayak (USAC/K)'s Dragon Boat USA (DBUSA), and The United States National Dragon Boat Team (DBUSA).

Preceding the meeting on Wednesday, June 24 at 5:30, the United States National Team Head Coach Mike Blundetto, along with assistant coach Dave Wald as well as Regional Coach and Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club High Performance Coach Jim O'Dell, will conduct an introduction to Dragon Boating and high-intensity practice during the regularly scheduled Lanier Dragon Boat practice.  Paddlers of any discipline and skill level, rowing club members, or anyone who wants to experience Dragon Boat racing with members of the defending world champions are invited to attend.

Participants will get a glimpse of the work it takes to represent the USA at the world level.  DBUSA is the 2014 Nations Cup winner, marking its first World Champion status.  They are currently seeking to field the best team possible in defense of their title in next year Moscow at the next ICF World Championships.

Email Jim O'Dell if you would like to participate.  Note: non-Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club or Lake Lanier Rowing Club participants must fill out a waiver and are charged a fee of $10.
