BRASELTON - Georgia State Troopers have the driver of a car involved in a fatal hit and run Monday in Jackson County in custody.
GSP spokeswoman Franka Young confirmed in an email that the driver, Billy Eugene Bowers, Sr., was in custody. The 51-year-old from Gainesville allegedly hit a bicyclist on Highway 53 in Jackson County, about a mile before the Hall County Line.
Young confirmed the victim had been riding a bicycle. Charges against Bowers are pending.
Earlier, Jackson County Emergency Services officials confirmed that the person was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday afternoon.
In that press statement, county emergency services director Steve Nichols said emergency responders found a male victim unconscious and unresponsive. Nichols said resuscitation efforts failed, and the victim was pronounced dead.
Nichols also confirmed the vehicle that hit the person left the scene.
