Piedmont College to hold commencement events this weekend

DEMOREST - Piedmont College will celebrate Spring Commencement 2015 with three days of events and ceremonies at the campus in Demorest April 30–May2.

President James F. Mellichamp and Board Chairman Thomas A. “Gus” Arrendale III will present diplomas to 385 undergraduate and graduate students on Saturday during two Commencement ceremonies.

The Commencement activities will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 30, in the Swanson Center, where Piedmont's R.H. Daniel School of Nursing will present pins to 31 graduating student nurses.

On Friday, May 1, in the Chapel at 5 p.m., the college will hold a Baccalaureate service for all undergraduates. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Nancy Taylor, senior minister of Old South Church in Boston, Mass. Following Baccalaureate, undergraduates and their families are invited to dinner on the Quadrangle at 6 p.m.

Also on Friday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Swanson Center, the Piedmont College P-Club will host an awards ceremony for all senior student-athletes.

On Saturday, May 2, the Commencement ceremony for 199 undergraduate students will begin at 10 a.m. in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. The Commencement speaker will be Robert H. Pittman of Lakemont, founder of the Janus Institute, a business and community consulting firm. Named by Southern Business & Development magazine as a “Top Ten Consultant,” he has published numerous works in the areas of business, community and economic development, real estate, market analysis, and related fields.

 

A separate Commencement ceremony for 186 graduate students will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, also in the Mize Center. The Commencement speaker will be Athens-Clarke County Chief Magistrate Judge Patricia Barron. Judge Barron worked as an attorney with Georgia Legal Services for 20 years in offices throughout the state, and she is the former managing attorney of the Family Violence Clinic, where she trained law students to represent domestic violence victims.
