Severe storm threat increases Saturday afternoon

GAINESVILLE - Another rainy day is in store for north Georgia, with the threat of severe weather Saturday afternoon.

Forecaster Michel Leseney said strong thunderstorms could bring several different threats.

"There can be some heavier downpours with those as well.  They also can contain some damaging wind gusts, as well as large hail," Leseney said.

The good news is on the tornado out for north Georgia, according to Leseney.

"There is a small chance.  I think the better chance for tornadic activity is thankfully up to our north and into the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi river valley ."

According to the National Weather Service, afternoon round of storms are expected generally after 3:00 p.m.  While the severe weather is possible across all of north Georgia, better chances are in the northernmost areas, according to the service.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated with the system, localized flooding is possible, with rainfall totals around 1.5 inches, according to the weather service.

AccessWDUN Meteorologist Rob St. Pierre said the rain and severe weather threat in north Georgia is expected to move out Saturday night.
