Killer of Buford woman, others, seeks new trial in Florida murder case

TALLAHASSEE - A serial killer, responsible for the murder of a Buford woman in 2008, is hoping to overturn his death sentence from a different murder conviction.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that attorneys for Gary Michael Hilton say his public defenders didn't provide adequate representation for him. They want a hearing to present evidence and a new sentencing trial, which the paper reports will take place in September.

Hilton murdered 24-year-old Meredith Emerson in 2008 on Blood Mountain, and later confessed to her killing. He was given a life sentence in Georgia, then extradited to Florida. In Florida, he was sentenced to death in 2011 for the 2007 murder of Cheryl Dunalp, a 46-year-old nurse.

The 68-year-old was also convicted of killing an elderly couple, and is suspected of committing several other killings around the southeast.
