Johnson inherits Dixie Steel Head Late Model victory

By Brandon Reed Reporter

As has been said many times before, no matter who is flagged the winner, a race truly isn’t over until everyone has passed post-race technical inspection.

That was the case Saturday night at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. After the Steel Head Late Model Championship feature ended, a protest was a lodged. The resulting inspections led to the disqualification of the top two finishers.

That moved third place finisher Ronnie Johnson to the victory, giving him the $3,000 payday for winning the special event.

Mario Gresham moved to second, with Dawsonville, GA’s Matthew Turner in third, Jacob Grizzle in fourth and Chuck Padgett in fifth.

Michael Brewer, Randy Dillard, Bob Johnson, Chris Fennell and Clifton Moran rounded out the top ten.

The feature wasn’t without on-track excitement, including two spectacular crashes during the night. One occurred when Austin Horton took a wile ride up the frontstretch wall, coming down in a shower of sparks.

The second took place going into the first turn, when Matt Larson made hard contact with the inside wall, sending his car airborne. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from either shunt.

In other action, Luther Jenkins topped the field to score the Super Late Model feature victory. Dale Thurman finished in second, with Jason Croft third, Michael Page fourth and Austin Smith in fifth.

In the Crate Late Model feature, Shane Smith held off Justin Shipley to pick up the win. Coby Kilgore finished in third, with Curtis Cline in fourth and Jason Deal in fifth.

Randall Powell scored the Super Bomber feature victory. Jerry Fowler came home in second, with Ronnie Haynes in third, Andy Morris in fourth and Kenny Taylor in fifth.

Austin Smith was the winner in the Economy Bomber race. Dalton Polston, Chris Neese, Cade Ray and Gooch Spriggs rounded out the top five.

Jamie Cross topped the field for the Pony Stock feature victory, with Dan Bennett in second, Travis Smith in third, Mitchell Pope in fourth and Bo Jordan in fifth.

Edwin Scott was the winner in the Cruisers feature. Brian Dempsey finished second, with Jimmy Wilson third, George Wilson fourth and Randy Ledford fifth.

While Dixie Speedway will be silent this weekend, its sister track, Rome Speedway in Rome, GA, will be in action on Sunday, April 26, for the $3,000 to win Rome Rumble for the Super Late Model division.
