CONYERS -- Flowery Branch saw its modest three-game win streak come to an end Wednesday in a tough 4-1 loss to Salem in a key Region 8-AAAAA game for both teams.
The Seminoles (13-6, 7-4 Region 8-AAAAA) were able to take advantage of some key Falcons (12-5, 7-4) mistakes early. They scored two runs in the first and two more in the third off Flowery Branch ace Jonathan Hughes, who allowed just two earned runs.
The Falcons got their only run in the sixth and managed just three hits as a team.
The two squads will meet again Friday at Hog Mountain Sports Complex.
Both teams are still within striking distance trailing first place Gainesville and Loganville by just two games in the standings. Six teams are fighting for the four playoff spots.
"It's still wide-open for all of us so we can't afford to get swept," Flowery Branch coach Scott Meyers said. "It will be a huge game for both teams on Friday."
