Some Ga. peach crops hurt by recent cold weather

By Associated Press

MACON, Ga. (AP) Agriculture officials said Friday recent cold weather in central Georgia will reduce the amount of peaches produced this season.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent Jeff Cook told the Telegraph of Macon Friday that producers in Peach and Taylor counties could lose roughly a third of the peaches in 10,000 acres of orchards.

Cook said there was no breeze during cold weather last weekend to prevent frost from forming on the trees in the central part of the state.

Crawford County farmer Robert Dickey says he recorded a low of 28 degrees at his orchards on Sunday and some of his trees were also damaged.

In north Georgia, farmers have not commented on the potential damage to the peach crop following freezing weather last Friday and Saturday night.
