GAINESVILLE - The Longstreet Society is kicking off its a fund-raising campaign titled "The Longstreet Society Stay Home and Relax Confederate Memorial Ball."
The campaign will make possible the redesign and restoration of the grounds of General James Longstreet's historic Piedmont Hotel in Gainesville.
The group's long-range planning committee and Gainesville landscape architect Rick
Freeland are at work combining the hotel's existing lawn and a newly acquired lot along Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd into a larger, historically appropriate space.
The garden will feature paths, trees and shrubs, new and welcoming fencing, a grape arbor, a peace garden and gardens in memory of the General's granddaughter Jamie Paterson and Longstreet champion and supporter Jamie Hollis. The grounds themselves will be named in honor of Confederate veterans - especially the veterans of Longstreet's First Corps.
