No snow make-up days scheduled for Gainesville City Schools

GAINESVILLE - Even though Gainesville City Schools lost six days of classroom time because of snow days in February, there will be no changes to the school calendar.

Gainesville Schools Superintendent Dr. Wanda Creel confirmed that the school system will not schedule make-up days for snow days, saying that teachers took advantage of online learning and other non-traditional strategies to keep students on schedule with learning.

"Students that did not have access to online learning either due to power outages or access to technology were given the assignments and provided a window to work with their teacher to complete the learning assignments," said Creel via email.

Creel said the system will make a change in the Georgia Milestones test dates.

"We have worked with the Georgia Department of Education and pushed our testing back three days (April 22-29) to the very end of the state testing window in order to give our teachers and students a little longer to focus on teaching and learning the standards," said Creel.

In addition, Creel said the school board has already worked on the 2015-2016 school calendar, identifying potential make-up days for inclement weather in case winter hits hard again next year.
