GAINESVILLE - Habitat for Humanity of Hall County celebrated the construction of its 49th home at a dedication ceremony Saturday morning and turned over the keys to the new owners.
Volunteers and financial support were provided by 12 Stone Church, McDonald's of North Georgia and the Junior Service League Volunteer Program. Students from Habitat High gained on-the-job experience in all facets of home construction while assisting in the build.
The Kai family fled their homeland of Myanmar (Burma) in May 2011 due to religious persecution and increasing militant rule. Peter Kai said that he is, "very thankful for the terrific opportunity that Habitat has afforded my family. Becoming an American and owning our own home are blessed gifts from God."
When asked about the process of becoming a Habitat homeowner, his wife San replied that, "if you try for something, you can get it by working hard and having faith." The Kai's have two children, Merry, 5, and Victor, 3. Merry says she is most looking forward to a new home because she "will be safe and not scared anymore."
The Kai's will buy the home for an affordable price with a no interest, 20-year loan financed by Habitat. The Kai's have paid closing costs, completed financial education and have volunteered over 300 hours in sweat equity as part of the Habitat program. Their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build future Habitat homes.
Habitat Hall Executive Director, Ann Nixon said, "it is always rewarding to see people's dreams come to fruition. The Kai's are hard workers who desire the best opportunity for their family to succeed."
