Veteran coach Sid Maxwell to take over Dawson County football

DAWSONVILLE -- Dawson County football made it official on Tuesday night, naming Sid Maxwell as its new head coach.

Maxwell, a 20-year coaching veteran, was approved at the Dawson County Board of Education meeting and will take over from Jeff Lee, who resigned in January following 12 seasons in charge.

Maxwell has led both Sequoyah High School in Cherokee County and Lambert High School in Forsyth County, compiling a record of 133-75 while finishing with a winning record 13 times.

At Lambert, Maxwell qualified for the state playoffs in three seasons; he reached the state playoffs eight times while at Sequoyah and currently has more wins than any other coach in Cherokee County football history.

Playing in Region 7-AAA, Dawson County is coming off a 2-8 campaign in 2014 and was 48-74 under Lee, reaching the state playoffs twice (2004 and 2012). The Tigers have made the state playoffs just four times as a program -- 1999, 2000, '04 and '12.

Coach Maxwell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Emory & Henry College located in Emory, Va. He also holds a Master of Science degree in exercise physiology from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala., as well as a degree in administrative leadership from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.
