ATLANTA (AP) Georgia state police will not charge a lobbyist who brought a gun to the state Capitol this week, saying he likely did it my mistake.
WSB-TV Channel 2 in Atlanta reports that the Georgia State Patrol discovered the weapon during their security scans at a Capitol public entrance.
Capitol police allowed the man to return to his car and secure the weapon. Police did not release the lobbyist's name.
Captain Mark Perry told Channel 2 that officers have discretion on gun possession in the security lines. He said the lobbyist's reaction made clear that he forgot he still had the weapon.
New rules this legislative session require lobbyists to undergo security checks alongside the general public. Previously, IDs issued by the General Assembly allowed them to bypass security checkpoints.
