Gainesville, Hall schools mull making up lost days, work

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - School systems across north Georgia have already lost several days of instructional time this month because of icy weather. Now, many of them are closed again today, including the Gainesville and Hall County systems.

Students and teachers in Hall County have been instructed to use the "School From Home" program today to help make up the missed day. Students are expected to complete assignments via the Internet in between snowball fights and hot chocolate breaks. That was a challenge last week, however, when the ice storm knocked out power to thousands of homes, leaving them with access to the Internet.

Kevin Bales, the director of middle and secondary education for Hall County schools, says the goal of "School From Home" is to have students do about 2-3 hours of meaningful school work during a snow day.

By the way, there's no official word from county school officials on how last week's missed days will be made up. The board was briefed on the situation last night.

Gainesville Schools Supt. Wanda Creel says city school officials are still contemplating their options as well. "We have not shared a complete plan with our board at this time," she said Tuesday morning.
